By Super Myo | Allied Health Professional & Manual Therapy Truth-Teller Who Keeps it Real!
Let’s talk about something that gives every allied health professional that eerie gut-twisting feeling… the dreaded “Hey, I can’t make it” text.
It's a situation we've all been in. Appointments booked, rooms ready, research prepped — and then comes the last-minute cancellation. No explanation. No warning. Sometimes, not even an apology.
Now, let’s be real: life happens. Emergencies, sudden illness, car troubles, family crises — we get it. That’s just being human. But what truly chokes the life out of a clinic? The repeat offenders. The “I forgot.” The “I slept in.” The “I had work.” The “I’ll reschedule when I feel like it.”
Because it’s not just about a missed appointment. It’s the ripple effect through the entire system.
When you ghost or cancel at the last minute, it’s not just your slot you’re wasting. That’s a full 45–60 minutes (sometimes more) that could’ve helped someone in pain. Someone needing answers. Someone who actually respects the profession.
Every no-show costs your therapist time, money, and energy:
And here’s the kicker — no-shows can cost clinics between $150–$300 per session depending on service type (Medical Group Management Association, PubMed ID: 34242373).
To avoid charging a fee, I offer a cheeky but kind solution:
“Do you know anyone who can take your spot? Friend? Partner? Mum? Dad? Your neighbour’s cat with tight hips?”
Some take it seriously. Some don’t. But it gets people thinking. Because let’s be honest — would you fill a trolley at Woolies, walk out, and tell the cashier, “I’ll pay you next week”? Didn’t think so.
Clinics across Australia lose millions in revenue each year from no-shows (AHPA, 2023).
In a 2021 survey, 67% of therapists linked poor attendance with professional burnout (PubMed ID: 34443203).
No-shows cause:
And no — we’re not massage chairs at Westfield. You don’t just drop in when you feel like it.
Behind every booking is a human being who genuinely cares about your recovery. When you ghost them, they lose income, time, and morale. They’re building a business, supporting a community, and maybe just trying to pay rent.
To those who treat their therapist like an afterthought — seriously?
We’re here when you need to walk properly again, manage chronic pain, rehab your body, or regulate your nervous system. The least you can do is show respect.
To therapists:
To clients:
Good therapists are burning out. When they walk away, who’s going to fix your busted shoulder, herniated L5/S1, or glutes tighter than a drum?
This is a clinic — not a hobby. We’re here to help, not babysit broken calendars.
So let’s do better.
Show up. Or send someone else. If not? Pay the fee. Respect the time. Be accountable.
Because we’re not just your therapist. We’re professionals. And yeah — we’ve got therapist appointments too.
